Suggestions for Family Together Time: Family Camping Activities with Teens and Adolescents

Staying active in the great outdoors is a wonderful way to strengthen family ties. Look at some of the great ideas from How Stuff Works.com.  Using a natural setting offers a dynamic ever changing canvas to explore, observe, and learn from.

Try the following:

1. Take a Hike – Identify animal tracks, rocks or birds. Stop by the visitor center and learn about the area you are staying in.  Practice map-reading skills, learn to read a compass.  Afford the challenge of a slightly rugged terrain.

2. Build a Campfire.  Learn how to layer tinder and small twigs, Stack larger branches and logs both in the fire pit and close by for later use.  Make sure there is water close by for safety.  Don’t forget the S’mores!

3.  If you are near water, how about a Paddle in a Canoe.  Don’t forget the life jackets!  A slow boat to nowhere is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.  It can offer a roomy ride and great family time together.

4.  Try telling stories or talking about memories of other trips and vacations in the past as you have your meals or sit before a fire. Remembering good times together helps family members feel more connected..  Give everyone a chance to speak.  As parents, it’s always interesting to hear your kids/teens perspective concerning their memory of a time together.

Get your family together, and plan some outdoor time together – today!

Parenting a Teenager!
New York Times – Lisa Damour

If being a teenager is hard – try being the PARENT of a teenager.

Any parent of an adolescent knows the pain of being rejected, neglected, or artfully critiqued by their teenager at one time or another.  Some parents, feeling too hurt by these rejections, make themselves unavailable to their teen. However, being unavailable to your teen comes at a cost.

Wise parents aren’t afraid of their teens getting mad at them, and they teach their teens to understand that that is is okay to be mad, but NOT okay to hurt others with their anger. Raising teenagers tests the sturdiest adults – even on the good days!

Stay open and support  your teen.  Especially in the difficult times. Through the process you will find that teens interrupt weeks of frostiness with moments of warmth and intimacy. And isn’t it those moments we want to enjoy?
