The Impact of Mentors on the Lives of Young People

In 2013, researchers from Hart Research Associates surveyed a nationally representative sample of 1,109 young adults to assess their experiences with mentors in their youth. The resulting and groundbreaking report, entitled The Mentoring Effect: Young People’s Perspectives on the Outcomes and Availability of Mentoring* outlines many positive and lasting impacts that an adult mentor can have on a child’s life. Researchers found that youth who have mentors:
  • Set higher educational goals
  • Are more likely to attend college
  • Are more likely to participate in positive behaviors such as sports, extracurricular activities and volunteer opportunities
  • Have higher levels of self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Are more resilient when facing setbacks or challenges
Our goal at PRN is to match our students and young adults with mentors who can relate to their specific challenges and interests. We seek out adult mentors in the communities where our students live, and hope to foster mentoring relationships that create lasting impact on the lives of the young people with whom we work.

 STAFF HIGHLIGHT:
Elizabeth Ruddy

Currently a full time Mental Health Technician working with one of TRACKS by PRN’s clients, Elizabeth states, “I know that I’m making a difference when I help a client set up his first bank account and create a budget, or when I can talk him through how to handle a bad day without shirking his responsibilities at his job. It’s great to work in an environment where I am challenged every day, where my ideas and opinions are respected, and where I am constantly learning. I feel so fortunate to work with such a great team at PRN!” Elizabeth enjoys art, reading, cooking, and animals, especially her 2 year old black Lab & Rottweiler mix, Nox. Elizabeth is in the process of getting Nox certified as a therapy dog, so he often accompanies Elizabeth when she is working–which is much appreciated by her mentee!
Thank you for all of your hard work, Elizabeth! PRN appreciates all that you do!

DID YOU KNOW….

That TRACKS by PRN is a program specifically designed to support the needs of young adults? When making the sometimes overwhelming transition into college or into independent living, young adults often need extra guidance and support in order to develop and practice independent living skills, build sustainable structure into their daily lives, and access community resources to help them become self-reliant. Additionally, TRACKS can help young adults and their families navigate a transition out of the parents’ home and into an apartment and more independent life. TRACKS is a completely customized program which can meet the needs of those who have exhausted more traditional resources. If you know a young adult who might benefit from TRACKS, please give us a call. You can find more information about TRACKS on our website at:
